The role of Principal Designer is a legal requirement in relation to the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM2015) which came into force on 6th April 2015. A Principal Designer must be appointed on construction projects where there is more than one contractor, or it is reasonably foreseeable that more than one contractor will be working on a project at any time.
The Principal Designer must be appointed as early as possible within the design process and will provide the client with help in matters such as collating pre-construction information along with undertaking their other duties outlined in Regulation 11 of CDM2015. The Principal Designer must plan, manage, and monitor the pre-construction phase and co-ordinate matters relating to ensure that, so far as reasonably practicable, the project is carried out without any risk to health or safety. The appointment can carry on through to the construction phase as the Principal Designer also needs to liaise with the Principal Contractor and share information relevant to the planning, management and monitoring of the construction phase.
Design In Safety feel that communication and co-operation is key in undertaking the role of Principal Designer, working in collaboration with other duty holders and members of the design team to ensure that health and safety is an integral part of the design and that the Principles of Prevention are followed throughout.
We will work closely with the client to ensure full compliance with their required duties, whether they are fully conversant with the regulations or have no previous experience. We can adjust our service to suit any client requirements. We will help collate and produce the relevant pre-construction information which is already in the possession of the client or that is reasonable to obtain. We will assess its adequacy, provide advice as to any gaps in information, how these can be filled and provide assistance in doing so.
Having extensive experience as a Designer previously, Design In Safety can relate with the other members of the design team when coordinating the various aspects of the design. We can assist in the production of designer risk assessments and will produce a Project Hazard and Risk Register for the project to record and help reduce, control, or mitigate any risks highlighted through the design process. Any residual risks can also be recorded and relayed to the client upon completion.
Design In Safety will, with the help of the Designers, collect all relevant health and safety information relative to any subsequent work such as maintenance, cleaning, refurbishment, or demolition of the structure.
Design In Safety have developed a project management plan to ensure that they, along with all other duty holders understand and comply with their duties outlined within L153 ‘Managing Health and Safety in Construction’. If you should need any further information on our process or management systems please use the Contact Us facility to discuss further.
